June 2025 | National Rose Month

A Month for Roses and a Time to Share

June is National Rose Month, and if you’re reading this, chances are you already know how special that is. The rose isn’t just our national flower—it’s a part of our gardens, our memories, and for many of us, our daily joy. But even with all that beauty, too many people still think roses are too much trouble or too hard to grow. We know better.

So this month, let’s do something simple and meaningful: let’s share our love for roses. Whether you’ve been growing them for decades or just planted your first one, you have something to offer. Here are three ways you can help someone else fall in love with the rose, too:

1. Give a rose bush, not just a bouquet.

Next time you’re thinking of a gift, birthday, housewarming, or just because consider giving a live rose. Choose a hardy, low-maintenance variety with a reputation for easy success. A potted ‘Knock Out,’ a fragrant ‘Iceberg,’ or an old-fashioned shrub rose can open a whole new world for someone. And don’t forget to include a few tips from your own experience.

2. Invite people into your garden.

You don’t need to host a full garden tour. A casual visit over coffee or an evening walk with a neighbor can make a big impression. Let the roses do the talking. Point out the ones with fragrance, or share a fun story about how long one’s been in your care. Seeing healthy roses growing in real gardens, not just in glossy catalogs breaks down the myth that they’re “too hard.”

3. Share what you know.

Post a favorite bloom on social media with the name of the rose and why you love it. Offer to speak to a local group or school. Bring extra cuttings or blooms to your place of worship, the library, or the office. You don’t need to be an expert to be an encourager. Just let people see that roses are within reach.

This month, let’s celebrate the rose by helping it reach new hands and hearts. The more we share, the more likely someone else will give it a try—and find the same joy we do.

See you in the garden,

THIS MONTH'S FRAGRANT ROSE

'Empress Josephine'

This month's rose is from ARS member Karen Z. She writes: " My favorite Fragrant Rose is Empress Josephine, an old garden rose from around 1867." She inherited the shrubs from a dear friend. She loves the bumper crop of blooms each year and of course the sweet fragrance. It has also turned out to be a trophy winner this year, as her bloom of this rose won for best Old Garden Rose.

Root deformation and heat saturation of planting media are common challenges associated with growing roses and other plants in a container – whether you are a commercial producer or a rose grower. A strong root mass means a strong plant and a strong plant is more resistant to insects, disease, weather fluctuations and is easier to care for overall.

June is National Rose Month, if you needed a reason to celebrate roses, this is it! No matter how you enjoy roses – growing, showing, creating, painting, knitting, quilting or taking photos, now is the time to share those roses with everyone! Whatever shape this hobby takes for you, it is most likely shared by someone else around you. Share your love of roses with your family, friends and neighbors, and even strangers. You are sure to make their day! Who can deny the beauty of the rose, in all forms, in all colors and all shapes. While you are enjoying the roses in your garden, snap a photo and post it to social media, or just send it to your friend group. It will make them pause, appreciate the beauty, and most likely smile. Your photos don’t have to be perfect to make folks smile. But if you do take a stunning photo, why not take it a bit further? Enter it in the ARS Digital Photography Contest. There are numerous categories, and some just for novices. Give it a try! Sharing your roses through photography will make even more people take a moment, enjoy the rose, and smile. Dear Rose Friends

Craig Dorschel, ARS President

June is indeed National Rose Month! Think of all the occasions that call for roses; all the weddings, all the graduations, and red roses for Dad on Father’s Day. For us folks in the north it is also the month of our glorious peak Spring bloom.

Editor Chris VanCleave has some great suggestions for how to observe National Rose Month in his message. Allow me to make one more suggestion. How about giving a membership in the American Rose Society as a gift? Or gift yourself with a membership! While June is officially National Rose Month, every month is Rose Month for members of ARS and our affiliated local societies. We pour over catalogs in the winter, we eagerly look forward to planting our new acquisitions and watching them grow and bloom again and again as the growing season progresses. And, very important, we love the company of our fellow rosarians to share advice and just socialize.

And, most important, we grow, enjoy, and talk about roses for one reason: Roses are Beautiful!
